Success Stories - Kevin L.

Recovering with Support from Friends and Family

I am not proud of the choices I have made in my past life which led me to where I am today. I was hanging out with the wrong crowd and life had lost some meaning and importance. I was doing drugs and consuming alcohol, which took a wrong turn. I ended up in a coma for two months. I gave up on my life and so did the medical team at the Health Sciences Centre.

I would not have been able to make it through without your love and support. Thank you for believing in me and never giving up.

However my strong willed mother and my family were inseparable and amazing. They fought for me and did everything possible so that I can have the opportunity to go to the Riverview Health Centre and continue my journey to TLC.

Where do I begin? TLC is a group of people who care for and about individuals like me. They take the time to build a positive relationship with their participants. They make me feel that I am somebody who matters and show me my true worth to continue living. They understand someone with a brain injury. They challenge me to make myself better. Who could have imagined that I would be in my first year in University to become a social worker? I will not stop after this and will do whatever it takes to achieve my goals. Others will not end up in a wheel chair like me if I can help it. I have been to speaking engagements and have shared my life experience with my ups and downs and the poor choices I made in the past. With this opportunity I would like to say alcohol and drugs are not healthy and should not be used at all.

My mother is my hero, and I would like to thank my brother and sister, my father and my stepdad for never giving up on me. This has given me the opportunity to watch my nephew and niece grow and be a part of all their lives. It is great to see them around me. My cousin Kirk and my aunt Francis have continued to support me from day one since my accident. I am grateful to all of them.

A special thank you goes to the staff and management at TLC. Markos and Gord have opened many doors for me and challenged me by providing me with the true meaning of the quality of life and have supported me endlessly. I am so grateful for all the physiotherapists, occupational therapists at Easy Street through the Misericordia Health Centre, Riverview Health Centre, the Movement Centre and to all those who played a role throughout my journey of recovery. I would not have been able to make it through without your love and support. Thank you for believing in me and for never giving up.
